Mathematics Overview

  • Our math curriculum uses a combination of resources aligned to problem solving coordinated the CCSS Math Standards. In both grades we will use a combination of Everyday Mathematics, MARS tasks and weekly challenge problems, and Khan Academy. We will also focus on projects that include drawings, building things, planning trips, and analyzing data.

  • Basic Skills: 5th and 6th graders need to be fluent in multiplication and division facts, and very familiar with fractions. Please practice at home.

  • Challenge Work and Pre-Algebra: Students who exhibit a mastery of the 6th grade content will be pushed with an additional pre-algebra curriculum that will prepare them for algebra in 7th (or 8th) grade.

  • 6th grade is a benchmark year for NWEA MAP testing and for grades.  All students need to work hard and make academic strides, or else late June and July will mean summer school…but, hey, we’ve got this!!!

Social Studies Overview

The focus of 6th grade Social Science is the study of Ancient cultures and the ways that our current world has been influenced the great civilizations that have come before our own. The intent is to bring these ancient cultures and ideas to life by connecting them to present day politics, geography, culture and demographics so that students understand that these rich histories should not be viewed in isolation.

  • The curriculum will be pulled together from various sources, including the DBQ project, a Common Core Standard aligned curriculum that focuses in-depth questions based on primary and secondary source documents.

  • Geography, mapping, and built projects will comprise a significant portion of our units.

  • Reading, writing, and supporting your ideas with sources will be critical to a successful year.
