Dear Rising 6th Grade Students and Families, The 6th grade team is looking forward to a productive 2019 - 2020 school year! Sixth grade is a milestone year. Students are expected to work hard, to achieve academically, and to meet deadlines. We will work with you and your child to ensure that every student can meet and exceed these expectations if they are focused on learning. It is important that students not just turn in the work, but that they demonstrate an understanding of course material and can apply that understanding to new learning. Here are some things that you should be aware of as you transition to 6th grade at Ray. Class Size: There are only two sixth grade homerooms, so class size will increase from 24 students per class to at least 35 per class (this will be for all content areas). Promotion Year: Sixth grade is a bridge grade, so it is very important that each parent is signed up for Aspen’s Parent Portal and can monitor your student’s grades regularly. The promotion policy can be found at the following link. https://cps.edu/Pages/Gettingtothenextgrade.aspx Teacher-Parent Communication: Email is the best way to reach each of us. We will try to respond within a timely manner, but feel free to send a reminder email if we do not respond within 48 hours (Mon-Fri). Lockers: Students will have assigned lockers, as classroom desks will be only for subject based textbooks. Belongings, notebooks, binders and materials should be organized in their lockers. Students will be assigned a locker buddy and need to provide a lock if desired. Homework: It will frequently be assigned through Google Classroom and Khan Academy, along with paper based assignments given out each week. These assignments will typically be posted on our teacher websites.

Ms. Drewa - vldrewa.weebly.com School Supplies: Each child must have their own school supplies throughout the entire school year. A copy of the school supply list is sent home at the end of the school year and posted on teacher websites. We hope that everyone has a nice summer (if the weather ever decides to cooperate) and comes back to school excited about the new learning opportunities that will be on offer in 6th grade. If you have any questions or concerns, the best way to reach Mr. Papczun is at pcpapczun@cps.edu and Ms. Drewa at vldrewa@cps.edu . Sincerely, Mr. Papczun and Ms. Drewa
