5th Grade Math:
This week we will be exploring the Volume of rectangular prisms. Students will learn how to use multiple strategies to describe the amount of space a 3D box would hold, including by counting cubic units, measuring dimensions and using the Volume formulas (V=length x width x height; and V=Base x height).
Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.C.4 Measure volumes by counting unit cubes, using cubic cm, cubic in, cubic ft, and improvised units.
6th Grade Math:
This week our 6th graders will be learning how to evaluate dot plots and identify landmarks in a set of data, such as the minimum, maximum and range. They will also learn how to find measures of center, such as the median, mean, and mode, and determine how each of those measures is useful in describing a data set.
Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.SP.B.4 Display numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots.
6th Grade Science:
In Science class, we will wrap up our mini-unit on cells with a project diagramming an animal cell and describing the functions of the different organelles. We will also begin a unit on earth science, as we compare the differences between climate and weather. Learning more about the current forest fires in the western US will drive some of our studies about how climate and weather affect our lives.
Standard: MS-LS1-2 Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways that parts of cells contribute to the function.
Standard: NGSS 3-ESS2-2 Obtain and combine information to describe climates in different regions of the world and their environmental interactions both with other living things and with nonliving factors.
