Week 4 Curriculum Update

Here is a brief review of our learning for the week of September 20-24.

This week, we will be continuing to work on our Math Geometry unit and our Science Cell and Microorganism unit.

Math: We are learning how to calculate the area of composite shapes by breaking down those shapes into smaller shapes. Composite shapes are shapes made up of two or more rectangles, triangles or parallelograms. Students will learn how to transfer dimensions (side lengths) across a shape to find sides that are unmeasured, and will practice drawing composite shapes on graph paper even when certain side lengths are not given. They will continue to practice using the Area formulas for parallelograms (including rectangles) and triangles.

Science: Students will continue our study of cells and microorganisms by research and studying leaves. They will collect, sort and categorize leaves from the playground area, and then will identify and research the species of tree or plant. Throughout the week, they will work on a project that 'zooms in' on the leaves to the cellular level, learning how different plant cells work, and the jobs they do for the tree or plant.
